BBQ meatloaf will be served at the next luncheon on October 22nd at noon at the OFH. Our speaker will be Sylvia Drake the Homeland Security Chairman representing Andover. The cost is $2.00.

Letters went out to the seniors who signed up for the fall/winter chore program. If you would like to have a chore worker do raking, gardening or snow shoveling contact Cathy Palazzi at 742-8088.

Renewals for Medicare D begins November 15 through December 31, 2007. If you are in need of a review of your current meds and program please call me and we will go over it together. I have received the new price list for 2008 and some companies have reduced their rates for 2008!

As your CHOICES counselor I qualified to help you with your insurance questions, Hospice, Medicare, Medicaid and other important related issues. If you need assistance with paying your electric or oil bills, please call me and I can help you.

I have arranged with a team from AARP to come to Andover June 4 and 5 to hold a senior driving course. Once you complete this course you receive a certificate that entitles you to as much as 10% discount on your auto insurance.

On June 25th we will be starting a group book discussion club for seniors at the Andover Library. We will be reading a light mystery and the time is from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. If you would like to attend and need a ride please let me know.

Shingles is on the front page lately and there is now a new shot available for you to receive from your PCP. This shot is not covered by Medicare and therefore many seniors are not receiving this important shot. If you had Chicken Pox as a youngster please keep in mind that after the age of 60 years old it is possible for you to contact shingles. It is a very painful disease and one that can be avoided.

Insurance rates are climbing more and more. There are supplement insurance carriers out there who can offer the same coverage or even more for a lower price. Let me know if you need help.

Scrapebooking has come to Andover and lots of the seniors have pictures they have been storing for years in hopes to put them in a photo album. The time has come to do this. I have arranged for a consultant to come to the Old Firehouse to help us sort out our photos and put them together so that they are memories for our family and friends. Call me for more details.

I have been told my our First Selectman that the broken door and worn out carpeting will be replaced at the Old Firehouse on Center Street. We are still waiting for a positive answer that the parking lot will be paved before winter of 2007. Hoping to bring the kitchen up to code in order to start serving CRT meals provided by the state. Keep turned for more details.

Our Senior Chore program has combined with Hebron and Marlborough intending to offer more help. We currently have money to mow, rake, plant flowers or weed your gardens. This money was received from generous donations. Call your Municipal Agent, Cathy Palazzi at 742-8088 if you need help.

It is not too late to receive a discount from SBC/AT&T on your basic rate. Call me for details.

The Outreach Program started in May of 2006 has been very successful. Our shut-in seniors receive a visit from other seniors. This program is vital to seniors to help less active seniors be more active by looking forward to a visitation and "chat" from seniors who have time to visit.

In June I will be attending two all day conferences on loss of eye vision and alzheimer disease. These topics will prove very useful as I have discovered this past year we have several seniors in town who are in early stages of alzheimer's or dementia and need more care each day.

This website page has been created for all seniors in Andover so they can be kept current with evolving medical issues and information on activities within the community and local towns.

As your Municipal Agent I am always looking for more ways to help the Andover seniors. The new program called "Driving Miss Daisy" has proven to be very successful. This program allows individuals who qualify to have a driver take them on various errands that they cannot do if they are on the dial-a-ride vans. This program is rather active at the moment as the Senior Transportation Van is not often available for Medical runs. If you are interested in hearing more about this program please contact me at 742-8088 or email me at nanasworld@comcast.net.

Coming Events

Andover was awarded a grant in the amount of $9300 for the Dial-A-Ride vans. The state has granted each town a set amount of money to help them with their transportation costs.

I am currently working with the Hebron Senior Center to have a fun day for the combined centers with the new Hebron Senior Center director.

Our yearly barbeque get together with Bolton will be in July so be sure to join in for a fun day and visit with our Bolton neighbors.

We will have a day in Manchester soon. More news later on the details.

Services Offered

The Community Home Services has a grant available for companion and home care. A person will go to your house to clean, fix meals, shop for you or do your laundry. Cathy is happy to let you know many of our seniors have taken advantage of this wonderful opportunity. This program is very helpful to many of the seniors and all seniors are entitled to this benefit. We will have a speaker from Willimantic at the May 18th Senior YAHC to talk about new improved services. Join in this informative day at the Old Firehouse at 1:00 p.m.

The Andover Municipal Agent can assist seniors with information, and referrals to all local state and federal programs that is available to them such as; ConnPACE, Medicare, Medicaid, and Food Stamps.

Please continue to utilize the many opportunities and programs available to the seniors of Andover. Although I turned in several grants in the spring we did not qualify for two of them.

It is in the early planning stages to remodel the Old Fire House and make it more user friendly. This is no easy task not only is there a great deal of paperwork involved but I must get three separate quotes from all the different vendors we need who might do the remodeling for us. I am still waiting for quotes but none have been furnished to me as of this writing. Our plans will be to remodel the inside and outside of the building including paving the parking lot. We have been told by the Board of Selectmen that the driveway will be paved and there is no definite date for this to be done. Our Board of Finance has moved this project to priority status and hope that it will be accomplished as soon as possible. However, we must wait patiently until other roads are paved.

I runs ads in the Rivereast and J.I. and Silver Lining to let the seniors know when an event is coming up.

You can find me at the Town Office Building during the week.
